Given the Mad Men mania sparked by last night’s season four premiere, I thought this photo worked well for today’s “Pictures of my Mother Mondays.” I can see Betty Draper heading to cocktails and dinner in this black dress.
My father snapped this shot when they were in Japan. His work often took him to the Far East, and this was one of the few times my mother accompanied him. When my father traveled solo to Tokyo he always returned with the most beautiful things for my mother—satin coats, folding fans, and silk kimonos and evening bags. On one trip my father brought back the most exquisite long strand of pearls. Women were wearing short strands, but when gifted this longer version, my mother stashed away her own short strand of pearls, and wore her new, longer one with almost everything. She truly treasured them.
When my mother died, her three sisters stayed post-funeral to help pack up her things. All of her jewelry was left to me, but I knew one of my aunts had always admired these pearls, and so I gave them to her with the unspoken understanding that the necklace would eventually find its way back to me. Once out of sight, I didn’t give much thought to it. Until, that is, the first Sex in the City movie came out two years ago. Amongst the many fabulous accessories Carrie Bradshaw wore, were a long strand of pearls that looked just like my mother’s. I did experience a sharp pang of regret when I remembered my mother’s pearls which were not in my possession. And, truth be told, I obsessed for several weeks over the fact that I had given up what I viewed as the new must have accessory—and not the fact that I had handed over something of such sentimental value. But, eventually I got over it. Because in the end, even though I don’t possess the pearls—and oddly enough have yet to find a photo where she has them on—what I will always have is the memory of my mother wearing them.Don’t do much reposting of other’s work, but I have to say, I’m really enjoying “pictures of my mother mondays” over at kkisthenewblack.com. Thought I would spread the word. Check it out…
